Goyazite - Rapid Creek, Dawson Mining District, Yukon Territory, Canada

A really niced phosphate specimen from the famed Rapid Creek locality in the far northern part of the Yukon of Canada. This piece features a coverage of sharp, well-formed, pseudo-cubic (trigonal) crystals of the uncommon strontium aluminum phosphate species, Goyazite measuring up to 4 mm, sitting on matrix.

Name origin:
Named in 1884 by Augustin Alexis Damour for the province of Goyaz (now Goiás), Brazil. (Note: Although the mineral type locality is in the province of Minas Gerais, the mineral is named after the neighboring province.)
