Devilline - Devilline - Kaum, Sauerland, Germany (#:MINS9255)

A truly attractive thumbnail with turquoise Devillina crystals up to 2-3 mm in size, richly scattered throughout the matrix. This specimen comes from the collection of Dr. Francesco Bedognè, no. 1715, and was published in the encyclopedia "Collezionare Minerali - Hobby & Work, 1996," issue 25, page 396. Original label available.

Name origin: Named in 1872 by Félix Pisani in honor of Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville [March 11, 1818 Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands - July 1, 1881 Boulogne, Hauts-de-Seine, Ile-de-France, France], French chemist. He was professor of chemistry at the University of Besançon from 1845 - 1851. In 1851-1859, he was professor of chemistry at École Normale Supérieure in Paris. He became professor of chemistry at the Sorbonne in 1859 - 1881. Deville discovered the first economical process to refine aluminum.
